Examinations play a central role in Nigeria’s education system. They determine who progresses to the next class, who enters tertiary institutions, and who qualifies for professional opportunities. From primary school tests to major standardized examinations such as WAEC, NECO, and JAMB, assessment remains the backbone of academic evaluation in the country.
However, the examination landscape in Nigeria is filled with challenges that affect credibility, performance, and trust in the entire system. One of the most pressing issues is examination malpractice. Over the years, malpractice has taken different forms, including impersonation, smuggling of answers, and digital cheating. These practices undermine merit, produce unqualified graduates, and weaken the overall quality of education.
Another major issue is the pressure placed on students. Many learners face high expectations from parents, teachers, and society. As a result, examinations become a source of anxiety rather than a tool for learning. Instead of focusing on understanding concepts, students often prioritize cramming and speed over deep comprehension.
Infrastructure is another limitation. Many schools still lack proper examination halls, good lighting, enough seating, and effective supervision. For computer-based tests, especially JAMB, poor network connectivity and inadequate CBT centers can disrupt candidates’ performance, leading to frustration and unequal opportunities.
Despite all these, the future of examinations in Nigeria shows signs of improvement. Examination bodies are adopting stricter monitoring systems, improving technology, and enforcing penalties for malpractice. Some schools now use continuous assessment to reduce pressure on students and promote consistent learning rather than last-minute studying.
To move forward, Nigeria must emphasize integrity, invest in better facilities, train teachers on modern assessment methods, and encourage a culture where learning is valued over shortcuts. This will restore trust in examination processes and produce students who are truly prepared for higher education and global opportunities
