JAMB CAPS Is Back: What Students Must Do to Secure Admission

The 2026/2027 university admission season is reaching an important stage, and students who are still waiting for admission need to pay close attention to their JAMB CAPS status.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board recently announced that its Central Admissions Processing System, popularly known as CAPS, has been fully restored after a temporary disruption. JAMB has also urged tertiary institutions to accelerate their admission processes and advised candidates to promptly accept admission offers when they are made.

For many Nigerian students, getting a JAMB score is only the beginning. Admission depends on several factors, including the institution, chosen course, O’Level results, available spaces, institutional requirements, and the admission process of the school.

Check Your JAMB CAPS Regularly

Students should not simply wait for a text message or assume that no admission has been offered. Candidates should regularly check their JAMB admission status and CAPS profile.

If an admission offer appears, it is important to understand what the offer means and follow the required steps promptly. Ignoring an admission offer or failing to respond appropriately can create unnecessary problems.

Your O’Level Result Matters

Candidates whose WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB results were previously awaiting should ensure that their results have been properly uploaded or verified where required.

This is particularly important during the admission process because institutions need the necessary credentials before finalising candidates for admission.

The 2026 WAEC results have already been released, with 61.54 percent of candidates recording credits in at least five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

Don’t Depend Only on Your JAMB Score

A good UTME score is important, but it does not automatically guarantee admission into a particular university or course.

Students should also pay attention to their institution’s admission requirements, subject combinations, O’Level requirements and departmental expectations. Where a preferred course or institution becomes difficult to secure, students may need to consider alternative programmes or institutions that match their qualifications.

JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting retained 150 as the minimum tolerable admission score for universities, while the minimum for polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and colleges of agriculture was set at 100. However, individual institutions and programmes may have higher requirements.

What If You Have Not Been Offered Admission Yet?

Not receiving admission yet does not necessarily mean the admission journey is over. Candidates should continue monitoring CAPS and their institution’s admission information while making sure that their credentials and personal details are correct.

Students should also avoid paying money to individuals who promise guaranteed admission. Admission decisions should be verified through official channels.

For the 2026/2027 admission exercise, JAMB has set October 31, 2026 as the deadline for public universities, November 30 for private universities, and December 31 for other tertiary institutions.
